Microsoft really, really wants to own all of your office work, so it keeps finding new tools it hopes you will add to your Office 365 portfolio. (All require an Office 365 account to use.) The latest is today?s announcement that its Microsoft Planner mobile app is now available for iPhone and Android phones. Microsoft said on its Office Blog that current Planner users can use this companion app to view and update their plans on the go.
In a discovery that could potentially help millions of women around the world, a landmark Australian study finds simply taking vitamin B3 supplements can significantly prevent miscarriages and birth defects.
This month and next month mark two important anniversaries in the field of particle physics?the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of Fermilab (the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, just outside of Chicago, Illinois) and the 5th anniversary of the Higgs boson discovery at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research, in Geneva, Switzerland). These two institutions have been united in their commitment to elucidate the laws that govern the physical universe. Their main achievements (the discovery of bottom and top quarks at Fermilab, and of the W, Z, and Higgs bosons at CERN) reflect how Fermilab and CERN, with other laboratories around the world, have joined forces throughout these 50 years to prove right the ?standard model??the theory that describes the fundamental components of matter that we know of?or, to challenge it. Our quest to understand the makeup and behavior of the world, to answer fundamental questions about the past and future of our universe, and to explore the possible existence of an ultimate ?theory of everything? should continue to be a worldwide effort.
In quantum field theory, Weyl fermions are relativistic particles that travel at the speed of light and strictly obey the celebrated Lorentz symmetry. Their low-energy condensed matter analogs are Weyl semimetals, which are conductors whose electronic excitations mimic the Weyl fermion equation of motion. Although the traditional (type I) emergent Weyl fermions observed in TaAs still approximately respect Lorentz symmetry, recently, the so-called type II Weyl semimetal has been proposed, where the emergent Weyl quasiparticles break the Lorentz symmetry so strongly that they cannot be smoothly connected to Lorentz symmetric Weyl particles. Despite some evidence of nontrivial surface states, the direct observation of the type II bulk Weyl fermions remains elusive. We present the direct observation of the type II Weyl fermions in crystalline solid lanthanum aluminum germanide (LaAlGe) based on our photoemission data alone, without reliance on band structure calculations. Moreover, our systematic data agree with the theoretical calculations, providing further support on our experimental results.

The Enterprise Data World 2017 Conference in Atlanta in the beginning of April was one of the best I have attended in recent years. At least 50 sessions for a guy like me interested in modeling. I chose to focus on sessions possibly related to Data Modeling in the new worlds of NoSQL, Big Data and Data Lakes.
The quietly brilliant industrial microbiologist H. Boyd Woodruff, whose work underpinned two Nobel Prizes, died at home in Watchung, NJ, on 19 January. He was 99. We lost a dear friend and mentor, and the world lost one of its last living links to the dawn of antibiotic discovery. Boyd played a major role in the expansion of the pharmaceutical industry from relying primarily on chemistry to also embracing microbial natural products.
