Brief About Us
We are proud of being the first in Australia to promote ‘Data Science and Analytics’ since early 2000. Our Data Science Lab has carried the lasting dedications to data science and analytics and general AI research and innovation since 2005 initially at University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and then at Macquarie University (MQ) since June 2023, led by Prof Cao, the Distinguished Chair in AI at MQ.
Led by Prof Cao, our pioneering initiatives in data science research, education and engagement in Australia and internationally include
- the first Australian research laboratory: Data Science and Knowledge Discovery Lab in 2007 at UTS;
- the first Australia’s big data event: Big Data Summit in 2009;
- the first Australian university’s institute Advanced Analytics Institute in 2011 at UTS;
- the first Australian data science degrees: Master by Research in Analytics and PhD in Analytics in 2011 at UTS;
- the IEEE International Conference on Data Science and Advanced Analytics (DSAA), technically supported by ACM and ASA in 2014;
- the Australia and New Zealand ACM SIGKDD Chapter in 2014;
- the first Australian edition of KDD: KDD2015 in Sydney;
- the International Journal of Data Science and Analytics (JDSA) at Springer in 2015.
We were the first in Australia to significantly drive data science and analytics innovation in transforming public and private sectors via successfully completing many large government and enterprise data science projects since early 2000. Our heartfelt thanks to business partners including many large organizations in both public and private sectors and in both Australia and overseas, e.g., Centrelink/Department of Human Services, Australian Taxation Service, Department of Immigration and Border Protection, Australian Securities and Investments Commission, IP Australia, Westpac, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, AMP, HCF, SAS and Microsoft.
Our data science leadership and impact laid the foundation of fostering the UTS research strength on data science and analytics. Our data science impact has been acknowledged in Australia’s first government paper Big Data Strategy – Issues Paper (2013), government’s annual reports, OECD report, and media reports such as by ABC news, Sydney Morning Herald, WIRED and InnovationAUS, etc. Some of our projects have led to billions of dollars in savings for the Government.
Our journey of initiating and pursuing excellence in data science thinking, leadership, research, education and training, innovation and applications as a team since 2005 has been recognized by various awards or honours, including the most prestigious science prizes in Australia Eureka Prizes: 2019 Eureka Prizes for Excellence in Data Science (to Prof Longbing Cao), in its Research and Innovation category, UTS Chancellor’s Thesis List (Dr Guansong Pang), and talent programs (e.g., Prof Cao as ARC Future Fellow at the professorial level, Dr Liang Hu, Dr Qi Zhang and Dr Zhilin Zhao as Distinguished Young Scholars (Overseas) by NSF of China, Dr Jinjiu Li for IBM PhD Fellowship, and Miss Peizhen Li for Google PhD Fellowship).
